After activating the

Surgical Unit if there's one (in that section), which can be distinguished by having a
Surgical Unit Activation Key inserted into it; there's often an activated one, and if one find a key, I suggest to
pick it up and keep it in case in an isolated section [spoiler, select to see]
(which will happen) there's not an activated one. The surgical unit will fill the health and to not have to return to it often, and to save
nanites, one should improve
Endurance as one of the first upgrade, using
Cybernetic Modules in an
Upgrade Unit.
Ranged non-psionic weapons degrade with use thus maintaining one is important. A player can do so by using a
Disposable Maintenance Tool and having a minimum of 1
Maintenance; the former being limited, I strongly advise to upgrade the skill before starting to use it, advice which at the time of writing this is shared on the tool page in its section Strategic Analysis as
Getting a moderate maintenance skill level (3-4) before starting to use maintenance tools is often preferable. This eliminates high consumption of the tools early in the game
and in that spirit one could use damaged weapons in increasing degree of damage (most used 1st), advice which is partly shared in the same section as
Early in the game, it can be preferable to just swap weapons in poor condition for ones with better condition.

One might consider to first get Agility to 3 and Energy Weapons to 4 and to use a
Laser Rapier, if melee is desired, perhaps as a backup.
melee effectiveness is proportional to strength, and a good advantage to a pure Laser Pistol run is to have more in inventory.
harvesting Disposable Maintenance Tools on
Cyborg Midwife and
Maintenance Robot; the 2 prevalent on the
Hydroponics Deck, and is easy to do so after getting an armor, decent strength & endurance, and a
Laser Rapier.
Modifications
20 nanites initial difficulty 100% Upgrade 1 - Increases storage capacity by 50%, which is counting Maintenance bonus and increases damage by 10%.
20 nanites initial difficulty 120% Upgrade 2 - Decreases energy consumption by 33% and increases damage to a total of 25%.
